Notasulga, Alabama, is a town with a rich history rooted in its early settlement, its role during the Civil War, and its connection to prominent figures like Zora Neale Hurston. Initially known as Moore's Cross Roads, the town was established around the land purchased by Amos Moore in the 1840s. The arrival of the Montgomery-West Point Railroad in 1844 significantly impacted the town's development.
What is the history of notasulga?
In 1842, Amos Moore purchased 160 acres of land and the area became known as Moore's Cross Roads. In 1849, the name was changed to Notasulga. Railroad service first came to Macon County in 1840 when the Montgomery Railroad reached Franklin. Tuskegee suffered a fire in 1858, which destroyed most of the downtown area.
